About Kit
Software written where it is actually used.
Kit is built in Kampala, for businesses that have spent two decades being sold systems designed for somewhere else — and then being told that their way of trading is the thing that is wrong.
What we make
Kit POS runs the counter, the stock room and the books for retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers across East and West Africa. It does the things a business here actually does: several currencies in one day, several branches on one licence, EFRIS fiscalisation that has to match the authority exactly, and a connection that comes and goes.
The Kit AI desktop app puts all of that on the counter machine, and keeps selling when the line drops.
Kit AI is the newest part: an assistant that can read your business, and only ever the part of it you personally have permission to read.
The decision we are proudest of
The permission boundary is the whole product.
It would have been faster to give the assistant a database connection and a strongly worded instruction to be careful. Plenty of products do exactly that, and they demo beautifully.
We think it is the wrong shape. A system that can read every salary in the company is a system that will eventually read one out to the wrong person — not because it was attacked, but because somebody phrased a question in an unlucky way on a Tuesday.
So Kit AI holds no permissions of its own. Every record it touches is checked against the permissions of the person who asked, using the same gates the rest of Kit runs — gates that know nothing about assistants, prompts or personas. When it refuses, it says which rule refused, because “I cannot help with that” is not an answer anyone can act on.
And the second proudest
Two unfashionable things we believe about money.
The number you watch while you work should be the number on the invoice. Not a model-token count that quietly becomes something else at the end of the month. One figure, in front of you, all the way through.
Credit you have already paid for should never be revalued. Which is why Kit AI credit is held in tokens rather than in shillings. If we raise our prices next year, what you bought this year buys exactly as much as it did the day you bought it.
The continent we build for
Not a pilot programme. A specification.
Traders, first
The hardware wholesaler in Kikuubo, the pharmacy chain in Nairobi, the cocoa buyer in Kumasi. Real margins on real volume, and no finance department to ask.
On hardware you own
Not a browser tab that needs perfect bandwidth. A desktop application on the machine at the counter, working whether or not the tower down the road is having a good day.
In your language of business
Shillings, cedis, naira, rand. Fiscal rules that change at every border. Suppliers who invoice in dollars and customers who pay in cash.
