Uganda's 1.6 million visitors: what it means for lodge bookings
The Tourism Statistical Abstract 2025 puts arrivals above 1.6 million and stays at 8.8 nights. What a small hotel or lodge should change in its bookings.
The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities released its Tourism Statistical Abstract 2025 on 30 April 2026, and the headline is a sector that has fully recovered. For an owner with eight rooms in Fort Portal or forty in Entebbe, the question is not the national total but what to do differently with the bookings diary this quarter.
The numbers from the abstract
According to the Ministry, international visitor arrivals climbed to "more than 1.6 million in 2025" and tourism earnings reached "UGX 5.8 trillion (about USD 1.62 billion)". The average length of stay was 8.8 nights and visitors spent about USD 986 per trip. The sector is estimated to contribute about 5.9 percent of GDP and to support more than 876,000 direct jobs, about 7.5 percent of national employment. The figures were presented by the Ministry's Senior Statistician at a breakfast meeting in Kampala.
The year before had also been a growth year. The Uganda Tourism Trends and Statistics Report 2024 recorded 1.37 million international arrivals, a 7.7% increase, with earnings of USD 1.28 billion, up 26%. Two years of growth in a row is the context for every decision below.
Eight nights means multi-stop itineraries
A stay of 8.8 nights is rarely spent in one place. Visitors move between parks, lakes and towns, which means your lodge is one stop in a chain built by a tour operator or by the guest themselves. Two things follow. First, the operator is often your real customer: a company that books twenty rooms a year deserves a named contact, a rate card and a follow-up when their season starts. Second, your check-in and check-out days cluster, because itineraries are built around the same park schedules. Look at last year's arrivals by weekday before you set staff rotas.
What to fix in the bookings process
Quote from one diary. Double bookings happen when the phone, the WhatsApp thread and the online channel each have their own version of availability. Whoever answers an enquiry needs the same view of the next two weeks, by room, with provisional holds visible.
Record the source of every booking. Operator, repeat guest, walk-in, website, phone. After a season you will know which sources fill rooms in the low months and which only arrive when everyone is already full.
Take and track deposits. A booking with a deposit on record is a booking you can plan around. A booking without one is a hope. Note the amount, the date and how it was paid on the reservation itself, not in a separate book.
Hold the guest register details at booking time. The Tourism Board requires a register of guests with nationality, arrival date, nights booked and room number. Collecting most of it when the booking is made, and confirming the rest at check-in, saves the front desk ten minutes per arrival.
Prepare for 2027
The Uganda Tourism Board has begun training directors, managers and staff of accommodation facilities in the Albertine region, in Hoima, Buliisa, Kikuube, Kagadi and Masindi, on the minimum standards for tourism accommodation and the national grading criteria. UTB says the programme is part of preparing for "AFCON 2027, which Uganda will co-host", noting that "tourism numbers and demand for accommodation are expected to rise". Participants were also briefed by the Uganda Development Bank on financing options for upgrading or expanding facilities.
Whether or not your town hosts a match, a tournament that fills Kampala, Hoima and the surrounding districts pushes visitors into every property within a few hours' drive. Lodges that can show a licence, a rating and a clean booking record will be the ones operators call first.
A short checklist for this quarter
- Pull last year's bookings and count them by month, by source and by day of week.
- Write down your top five operators and agree their rates for the coming season in writing.
- Set a deposit rule and apply it to every booking, including the ones from friends of the owner.
- Put one person in charge of the diary each shift and make sure every channel feeds it.
- Check the UTB licence renewal date and the current grading status before the busy season starts.
Growth at the national level is only an opportunity for the properties that can say yes to a date with confidence, and then be ready when the vehicle arrives.
