Kit POS Desktop 3.4.2: a Log out button and a quieter till

Release 3.4.2 of Kit POS Desktop for Windows adds Log out to the Open register window, keeps local data between users and backs off polling on slow lines.

Kit POS Desktop 3.4.2 for Windows is published today, 1 October 2026. The download page at pos.kit.africa lists it as a 64-bit Windows installer of about 189 MB, replacing release 1.0.0 from 8 July 2026. This note covers what changed and what a shop should do before installing.

What is new

Log out from the Open register window

Until now, handing a till to another Kit user meant closing the app or clearing it. The Open register window in 3.4.2 has a Log out button. Use it to switch cashiers during the day or to sign out at close.

Logging out keeps the till's local data. Products, settings and any sales still waiting to sync stay on the device and sync once the next user with the right permissions signs in and the connection is available. Staff PINs work again as soon as a Kit user has opened the register.

A quieter till on weak connections

Release 3.4.2 runs health checks on demand instead of continuously, and background polls back off when the server is slow. On a shop connection that is shared with the CCTV and the staff phones, this means the counter is not slowed down by the app checking in.

Invoice numbers you can tell apart

Desktop sales use the uppercase format KOD-login count-invoice number, for example KOD-7-23, so a till's sales are easy to separate from web sales in reports.

Requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit. This release ships a Windows installer only; on other machines the web till at pos.kit.africa runs in the browser.
  • 4 GB RAM minimum; 8 GB is recommended for busy restaurants or multi-user tills.
  • 500 MB of free disk space plus room for offline sale history.
  • Internet for the first login. After setup, selling continues offline and syncs when the connection returns.
  • QZ Tray for ESC/POS receipt printers. QZ Tray is free to download and use, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and prints ESC/POS to USB, serial and network printers.

Permissions before you install

The till refuses to log in a user who lacks any of three permissions, with the message "User permissions are insufficient". Assign them in Kit under User Management, Roles and Permissions:

Area Permission Why
POS Desktop Login on a new device Registers the till and pulls the data needed offline
Products View products Shows products, variations, prices, lots and stock
Sell Sell products Creates sales, quotations and suspended token orders

The same roles apply on the web, in the phone apps and on the till, so a permission fixed once is fixed everywhere.

How to upgrade

  1. Sync any pending sales if you can. The office can see each till's pending count in Kit.
  2. Download 3.4.2 from the Downloads page and run the installer over the existing version. Existing local data is retained.
  3. Windows may ask for confirmation on the first install of a new version.
  4. Open the app, confirm the server is https://pos.kit.africa, and sign in with a Kit username or email.

If a sale was deleted in Kit while the till was offline, an admin can restore it from Reports, Deleted Documents, then sync the till again. If a paid desktop sale shows as partial in Kit, sync again and check the payment lines.

What has not changed

The selling flows are the same: cash and express checkout, credit sales against a customer, quotations that do not deduct stock until converted, token or suspended sales for tables and waiters, and Kit Pay mobile money from the checkout numpad with the sale finalised once the payment status succeeds. Receipt and restaurant section token printing use the same Kit printing flow as the web POS.
